素晴らしいのはいいのだが、以前からタグクラウドについては疑問を持っている。それぞれの単語の出現頻度に応じて文字サイズを変えるのはとても良いアイデアではあるのだが、何故「単語の位置」という情報を有効利用しないのだろうか、という疑問である。

英語のタグクラウドは位置情報を有効利用している。アルファベット順に並んでいるので、文字の大きさに関わらず、探したい単語を直ぐに見つけられる。しかし、日本語では、ひらがなとカタカナについては意味があるが、漢字を使った単語になると殆ど意味が無くなる。ごく一部の、漢字の出現順をある程度知っている特殊な人々以外にとっては、単にランダムに並んでいるものと差が無い。

これならば、例えば出現頻度順に並べた方がよほど親切だ。最初に大きな文字の単語が並び、だんだんサイズが小さくなっていくことになる。この場合文字サイズと位置とで同じ情報を重複して提供していることになるが、見易さはこちらの方が上ではないか。他に単語の出現時期の新しさとか、単語の属性とか、一部のタグクラウドでは色などを使って表現しようとしているものを使ってもいいかもしれない。

少なくとも僕は、寡聞にして「出現頻度順に並んだタグクラウド」を見たことが無い。ひょっとして、単語がごちゃごちゃ並んだ中で一部がボコボコと大きくなっているあの姿こそが「タグクラウドとはそういうもの」を体現しているのだろうか。並び替えたものはタグクラウドではない、ということになっていなければいいのだけれど。
