以前書いた記事「入社面接でなぞなぞを出す」で紹介した記事 "The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing", 新しいバージョン"The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing (version 3.0)"が出た。最初のバージョンに比べてフォーカスがはっきりしない（あれも、これもな雰囲気の）文章になっているのは、著者のJoelさんが更に経験を積んだために言いたいことが増えてきたということなのか。
新しいバージョンで追加された中で、特に印象に残ったのが以下の記述。
These softball questions seem too easy, so when I first started asking them, I had to admit that I really expected everyone to sail right through them. What I discovered was that everybody solved the problem, but there was a lot of variation in how long it took them to solve.
これらの問題は簡単すぎるので、誰でも解けるはずだ。ただし、解くのにかかる時間は大幅に違ってくるのは新しい発見だった。

高校の頃、数学の先生が何かと「この言葉を見たら手が勝手に動いてこれこれの法則を当てはめるようにならないとイカン」と冗談ぽく言っていたのを思い出す。当時は単なる受験テクニック伝授かと思っていたが、数学の基礎体力をしっかりつけるという副作用もあったのだろう。
以前の記事を書いた時、面接問題としていかに適当な難易度の問題を出すかばかりを考えていた。別のアプローチとして、簡単な問題からスタートして難しいレベルまで発展していけるようなものを考えて、候補者がどこまで時間内に進むかを見るのも有効かも知れない。
