日本語に訳せない英語

本来は「英語ではとっても良く使われる表現なんだけど、それをぴったり表現する日本語が無いんだよねー」と言って感心するのが趣旨なのだが、今回はほとんど使わない単語。「こんな概念も1単語なのかよ」という話でひょっとしたら面白いかと。

shanghai
地名ではなく、動詞。意味は「人を気絶させて船に運び込み、彼が気づいたら『お前は帰ることが出来ない。この航海中水夫として働くのだ』と無理やり水夫にする」。簡単に言えば「誘拐して無理やり水夫にする」。中国の大都市の名前がヒドイ意味の単語になっているのが凄い。上海で良く起こったことだったのか、中国への蔑視から生まれた言葉か（多分両方）。

中学生の時に偶然英和辞典で見つけたことがあった。こんなのネイティブスピーカーだって知らないんじゃないかとずっと思っていたが、今日思い立って聞いてみたらちゃんと知っていた（サンプル数1）。ああこんなところにも（教養ある）ネイティブとノンネイティブの壁が。
