不覚
うちの会社の日本法人の社長のNさんが、1月一杯で退任された。
最後に「お疲れ様でした」メールを送ろうと思っていたのに、どういうわけか1月31日の朝まで待ってしまった。日本時間ではもう2月じゃないか。不覚である。会社のメール以外のコンタクト方法も知らないし。
僕が日本法人に入社した後の2年間は独身寮に住んでいたので、ちょくちょく寮の先輩に呼ばれては飲み会をやっていた。そこで先輩方の仕事の愚痴、他部署の悪口、上司の悪口、そのまた上司の悪口などをたくさん聞く機会に恵まれた（もちろん他の話もたくさんあったが）。当時のほとんど全てのマネージャについての悪口や陰口を聞いたことになると思う。
しかし、当時事業部長だったNさんの話になると誰も悪く言わなかった。僕の入社以来ほぼ10年間、愛されるキャラクターとしての話とか、昔凄く出来るエンジニアだったらしいというような話は何度も聞いたが、悪口は結局一度もを聞いたことが無い。これは、実は物凄い事なのではないだろうか。
会社全体の業績が傾き、首切りが盛んに行われていた頃、
「こんな時期だからこそ、チャレンジする精神を失わないで欲しい。日本に限らず海外でも自分にとって良いチャンスやポジションがあればどんどんチャレンジして欲しい」
と仰っていた。その翌日、偶然廊下で会った時に
「僕はいつでもチャレンジする準備がありますよ」
と言うと、
「じゃあ自分で探しゃーいいじゃないか」
と切り返されてしまった。というわけで、今僕はここにいる。
こんな話を本人にすると「知らねーよそんなこと」と言われそうな気がする。それは措いても、最後に「次の会社で、もし良かったら雇ってください」と言えなかったのは心残りである。
