タックスリターンが送られてきた、が…
手続きには問題がなかったはずなのに州税のタックスリターンの情報に食い違いがあった話の続き。結局、W-2 Form と給与明細のコピーがちゃんと受理されたらしく、還付額の小切手が手紙で送られてきた。計算の明細も一緒にあり、「税務局はコスト削減を進めておるぞよ。E-Fileで申請してお前も協力するが良い」と書いてあった。E-Fileで申請したために俺の労働コストが増加したんじゃー！と紙に向かって毒づいても仕方がない。
明細を確認。申請どおりの額が並んでいる。天引きで収めた額がこれ、実際の税額がこれ、差し引きで還付額がこれ。$2142.00なり。よしよし、と小切手を見てしばし固まってしまう。$2149.29とある。
なんで、小切手のほうが $7.29 多いんだ？
申請したのが2月末あたりなので、本来ならば3月中旬に還付を受けているはずものが3ヵ月半遅れたことになる。この額は利子なのか？年利1%ならば丁度これぐらいになる。もしそうならいつも税務局が納税者に求める「利子と罰金」を逆に僕が貰えたことになってしまうが、将来この額について「払いすぎていたので返したまえ。利子と罰金も」と言われないかが少々心配である。
