「ブログには自己紹介があったほうが良いよ」というアドバイスを得たので、自己紹介をします。はじまりはじまり。

略歴：
１９７２年２月：誕生。
１９８４年３月：小学校卒業。
１９８７年３月：中学校卒業。
１９９０年３月：宮城県仙台第壱高等学校卒業。
１９９４年３月：東北大学工学部情報工学科卒業。
１９９６年３月：東北大学大学院情報科学研究科修士過程修了。
１９９６年４月：日本ヒューレット・パッカード（当時）に就職。神戸で測定機のソフトウェアエンジニアとして働く。
１９９８年４月：親会社のHewlett-Packard Company（当時）に出向、Santa Rosa で働く。駐在中に測定機事業がスピンオフされ、Agilent Technologies となる。
２００１年９月：駐在終了。神戸に戻る。
２００４年６月：日本法人から退職、親会社に移籍。再度 Santa Rosa で勤務。
日本人エンジニアの内どれぐらいの人達がアメリカで働いているのかは知らないが、アメリカで働く日本人エンジニアの中で一番多いパターンが「アメリカ駐在」で、次に多いのが「子会社・親会社・関連会社からの移籍」ではないだろうか。僕はそのパターンの両方をやったことになる。
入社以来ずっと測定機用のソフトウェアを書いてきた。神戸での最初の2年間はフガフガもがいている内に過ぎていった。ずっと「海外行きたい」と騒いでいたことと、入社時のTOEICの点数が結構良かったことから（か？）、アメリカ駐在が決定。日本とアメリカの共同開発の一員かつコミュニケーション窓口として働いた。
初めて海外に住んだ上に、仕事上での自分の裁量範囲が広がったこともあって、随分と退屈しない日々をすごした。この頃、たくさんの非日本人との交流が妙に面白くて、いわゆる「文化の違い」について書くために「Santa Rosa がりゅう日記」と称するウェブページを作った。今はもう閉鎖してしまったけど、その内容をこのブログの「昔の駐在日記」に再録してある。この自己紹介の前半部分も、そのページの自己紹介の使い回しだったりする。
駐在生活も3年半が過ぎ、少々マンネリ状態になってきたことと、会社の景気が良くなくなって来た事から（か？）、帰国。日本で以前より責任範囲の広いエンジニアとして働く。しかし、会社の経済状態悪化のために同僚や知り合いがパタパタと会社を去っていくのを見るにつけ、政治的で美しくない現象がそこここで起こるのを見るにつけ、いわゆる「自分の市場価値」というものを真面目に考えるようになる。
その結果、社内公募に応募して、現在のポジションを得る。自分のキュービクルの位置は以前の駐在のときから10歩程しか離れていないが、「日本代表」として日本アメリカ双方の人達と働くのに比べ、アメリカのエンジニアの1人として働くのは雰囲気が違うものだということを実感する。仕事内容も変わって、今までの仕事よりもより広い範囲で使われるソフトウェアを書くということになり、コンピュータサイエンス的により細かいことまでこだわる必要があるのは心地よかったり面倒くさかったりする。
英語は好きだったこともあって、アメリカに住むまでは結構自信を持っていた。英語の苦手な日本人とネイティブスピーカーの中間ぐらいに自分がいると考えていた。しかし実際に住んでみて、ネイティブとノンネイティブの間には深い深い溝があることを知る。以来、日々上達を目指してはいるものの、自分の満足行くレベルにはまだしばらくかかりそうな気配。英語が出来ない人から見るとペラペラだけど、英語しか出来ない人から見るとちょっと下手だね、もうちょっと頑張ろうねというレベル。とりあえず、日本語で話すときより自分の口数が少なくならないことが目標。
ブログを始めたきっかけは、久しぶりに読んだ「昔の駐在日記」が自分にとって妙に面白く懐かしかったから。あの頃は若かったなあ。それから、日本にいる友人達への近況報告ツール、コミュニケーションツールとしての側面もかなり大きい。さらに、日本語で複雑な話をしたり文章を纏める機会があまり無いので、自分の日本語運用能力が低下することも不安の種であり、それをいくらか軽減出来るかも知れないとも思っている。
そういうわけで、前回と違ってはっきりしたテーマが無いままスタートしてみた。今のところは興味の赴くままに色々書いてみようと思っている。やっているうちに何か面白いものが出てきたら儲けもの、ということで。もしここに書いた文章が誰かの役に立ったり、読んで面白いと思う人（自分も含めて）が存在するならば、やって良かったと思うことにしよう、と考えている。トラックバックやコメントはとても有り難いのでどんどんつけてやってください。スパム除く。
