部屋に行ってみると、誰も何のミーティングだか全然知らないようだった。 みんなが集まると、マネージャが重々しい口調で言った。
「今までいっしょに働いていた○○は、すでにこの会社の従業員ではない。私が知っていることはそれだけだ」


もちろん、それだけではミーティングは終わらない。みんなが次々と質問を始めるからだ。
「理由は何なんだ？」「知らない」
「彼はクビになったのか？」「知らない。もう従業員ではないとしか言えない」
「従業員でなくなると言う決断は彼がしたのか？会社がしたのか？」「知らない」
「誰からその知らせを聞いたんだ？」「人事のマネージャからだ」
「そのマネージャに理由を聞こうとは思わなかったのか？知りたくはないのか？」「別に知りたくはない。なぜなら、こういうケースでは理由を知っても何もいいことがないのは経験的に分かっているからだ」
「彼はもう二度とオフィスには来ないのか？」「従業員ではないので入ることは出来ない」
「自分たちが本人に連絡をとって、理由を聞いてもいいのか？」「それは自由だが、彼はすでに従業員ではないので企業秘密になるような話はしてはいけない」
「彼の席は誰が片付けるんだ？」「私だ」

こう書くとみんな心配しているように聞こえるが、実際はこの中に冗談や非常に冷静な意見も混ざっていた。彼の席にある、貸してあったＣＤを返してもらっていいか？とか、彼のＰＣをもらってもいいか？とか、もう彼のアカウントは抹消したのか？とか。 みんな驚きながらも、泣いたり怒ったりする人は１人もいなかった。 仕事中に感じていたよりも、みんな結構冷たいもんだ。

こう言う話はアメリカでは普通のことなのか、ミーティングの後に周りの人に聞いてみると、ほとんどの人が初めての経験だと言う。 多分あと10年勤めていても経験することは難しいだろう、理由も何も知らされないなんてどう考えてもおかしい、と。 ただ、２人だけちょっと変わったことを教えてくれた。
「従業員じゃなくなったと言う話は初めてだけど、こんな感じの緊急ミーティングは10年ぐらい前に出たことがあるぞ。 ……あの時の話は、『××は今日は有給休暇を取っている。実は今日、彼は性転換手術を受けていて、次に出社する時から女性になっている予定だ』だったな。 ハッハッハ！！」

いや、それは…今回とは全く違うじゃないか。
