僕がアメリカに来てから１年半が過ぎた。しばらくぶりに会う人には「もう、permanentになったか？」と聞かれたりする。つまり、期限付きの仮(temporary)の海外赴任の状態から、アメリカの親会社から直接採用し直されて、いまのポジションをいつまでも続けられる(permanent)状態になったかい、という意味。こう聞かれると、僕は大抵こう答える。まだ temporary なままだよ。でも、期間がまた延長されるかもしれないけど。

そうすると大抵のアメリカ人は「そうか！よかったな！」で終わるけど、更にもう少し聞かれる事もある。
「延長で君はいいのかい？自分の国に帰りたくないのか？」
うん、別に構わないよ。１０年とか２０年居なきゃいけないという話だったらちょっと悩んじゃうけど、２５年以上日本で暮らした後での２年や３年ならば、それで全てが変わってしまうわけじゃないし。逆に、ここで日本に帰ったら次に外国に住む機会はなかなか得られないだろうし、外国に住むという経験は非常に貴重なものだと思っているし...

大筋、正論である。だから、今まで僕に聞いてきた人は大抵そこで納得していた。が、今回はちょっとびっくりする事を聞かれた。
「なんで『外国に住むという経験』と言うんだ？『アメリカに住む』じゃないのか？」

うーん...それは、以前に同じような話をしたときに、他の人に誤解されてしまって「そうだよな、ほとんどの人はアメリカに一度住んだらずっと住みたくなるよ」なんて言われた事があったから。僕は、自分の生まれ育ったところと違う文化、風土、考え方を持った人達のところに住んでみるのがいい経験になると思っているわけで、アメリカに住む事が他の国よりいいとは思ってないから。たまたま学校では英語を習って英語が出来たし、自分のやりたい仕事が十分にある国は限られちゃうけど、香港でもシンガポールでもイギリスでも、英語が通じて自分のしたい仕事が出来る国があれば、そこでしばらく働いて暮らしてみたいと思うよ。一番早く実現できそうなのはアメリカだった、というのは事実だけど。英語の通じない国も魅力はあるけど、実際に仕事が出来るようになるまでを考えるともうしばらく先になっちゃうなあ。

アメリカに住んでいてなんといってもイライラするのは、アメリカが世界で一番で他の国はすべてアメリカに憧れている、と無邪気に信じているアメリカ人がいっぱいいる事だ。アメリカの常識を世界の常識だと信じて疑わず、よその国に言っても「変だった、変だった」と言う印象しか持てない人達。思考停止してしまっている人達に対して、どういう言い方をすれば「他の見方」を分かって貰えるのかなあ、と考えてもいい考えはなかなか浮かんでこない。
