だが、スポケンの暑さも僕の知っている「夏」とはかなり違う。僕の夏には、じっとりとした、日本特有の暑さがある。湿気を含んだもわっとした熱い空気と、遠くがゆらゆら揺れている風景がある。四方から聞こえる蝉の声がある。アスファルトの匂いと一緒に来る夕立がある。別に遠くに遊びに行かなくても、僕は日本に住んでいた時には「夏」をそこかしこに感じていた。僕はカリフォルニアに来てからずっと感じていなかったものを、スポケンの暑さで少し思い出していた。
少々強行軍だが、僕はあさってから休暇を取って日本に帰る。もうすぐ仙台では七夕が始まる。それに今、仙台は真夏のはずだ。
２年ぶりに、僕の夏が来る。
