知らないようだから教えてやろう
アメリカでは、長距離電話(国際電話含む)の会社は、自分で選んで申し込む。会社は安い値段をはじめとする様々なサービスを提供し、消費者はその中から選択する。サービスのバリエーションは多く、選択の幅は多いと言えるだろう。従って競争も激しく、電話会社を変えるためのダイレクトコールも時々かかってくる。
朝、ＡＴ＆Ｔから電話がかかってきた。
「おはようございます。御機嫌はいかがですか？」
「ねむいー」
「それでは、いつ頃ならよろしいでしょうか？」
「んー、起きたから今でいい」
「それでは御説明します。そちらは、707-XXX-XXXX 番ですね？今、お得なプロモーションを行なっています。あなたは、長距離電話、国際電話はどこに良くおかけしますか？..... えー.... 日本ですと、ＡＴ＆Ｔに加入すればただいま１分間２６セントの料金で御利用できます」
「高いよー」
「今はいくらで、どちらの電話会社を使っているのでしょうか？」
「１分１７セント。プライマス」
「えー、それでは、１分間２６セントで、これから６か月毎月２５ドル分無料通話できる、と言うことではどうでしょう？」
「それじゃあ５時間以上話せばＡＴ＆Ｔの方が高くなるじゃん」
「でもこれ以上の決定権は私には.... いやいや、えーと、それなら...... 毎月３０ドルの無料通話では？」
「それでも月６時間以上でそっちの方が高いじゃないか」
そこで、「ちょっと待ってくれ」の声とともに、しばらく間があった。作戦を変更したらしい。
「大体、プライマスって言うのはどこの会社なんですか？私は１５年ＡＴ＆Ｔで働いてきたけど、そんな名前は聞いたことがない。本当に１分間１７セントなんですか？東海岸あたりにたくさんある小さな会社の１つなんじゃないの？あなたは東海岸に住んでるんですか？」
「あなたは僕の電話番号を知ってるんじゃないの？」
質問に質問で返す戦法は良く効くなあ。
「分かった、あなたはかなりインテリジェントな人らしい(わーい)から、詳しく話しましょう。アメリカと海外を繋いでいる線を自前で持っているのは、３大電話会社のＡＴ＆Ｔ、ＭＣＩ、Sprint だけです。他の会社はそこから線を借りているわけです。回線使用料と中間手数料を払わなければいけないのに、３大会社より安い料金で営業できるのは変だと思いませんか？１７セントなんて安過ぎる」
「それじゃ、なんでその料金と十分張り合える割引料金を提示したわけ？その料金で営業できるからでしょ？」
「分かりました、ＡＴ＆Ｔに変えたくなったらいつでもお電話下さい。それでは」
僕はＡＴ＆Ｔの電話番号を知らない。でも、あの料金なら変えても良かったかもなあ。
